OK ladies, be honest. When was the last time that you cleaned out your makeup bag? You do know that you can throw those things away…well you have too…after a while it no good to use anymore, right?
To make sure the cosmetics you apply are safe and effective, smell them. If the scent is off or the color has faded, its time to throw it away. Here is a guideline for some of our favorites.
Eyeliner: 6 months to 1 year
Gel eyeliner only lasts six to eight months. A pencil, on the other hand, has a shelf life of one year. Because your using a sharpener on your pencil, it wont be a breeding ground for bacteria as much.
Mascara: 3-6 months
To get the full six months out of your mascara, don’t pump. Pumping dries out your mascara and your letting in the bacteria. Not something you want around your eyes.
Blush, eye shadow, and other powder cosmetics: 1-2 years
Powder lasts longer than wet formulas, but you still need to check them periodically. If the formula changes at all, toss it. If it smells, toss it. And if the color goes out of style, toss it! Don’t be afraid….err on the side of caution.
Foundation: 6 months to 2 years
Foundation in a pot expires in about 6 months; a pump formula can last one to two years. But you should also chance your foundation when the seasons change. Our skin is constantly changing and your foundation should chance along with it.
Lipstick: 2 years
Change in color, texture or smell are all big warning signs that your lipstick has expired. Clean them off, wipe them off, spray them with a little bit of alcohol just to keep them sanitized.
Natural products: 3-6 months
You can actually keep your natural products in your refrigerator to help them last a but longer.
These are just some of the tips to keep your makeup and your skin in the best shape available.
